Penile curvature treatment : is surgery the only option?
Most men have a slight curve in their penis, causing it to hang more to one side than the other.
However, for about 400 out of 100,000 men, this penile curvature is so severe that it severely limits penile function.
In fact, penises with extreme curvatures can make intercourse extremely painful or completely impossible, leading thousands of men looking for a penile curvature treatment.
In medical parlance, curvature of the penis is known as Peyronie’s Disease or fibrous caverositis, a condition in which fibrous scar tissue builds up in the layers of erectile tissue resulting in one or many sharp bends in the penis.
Origins of penile curvature
Research has shown that Peyronie’s Disease occurs when rigid scar tissue overtakes normal, flexible tissue within the penis. In a normal erection, elastic tissue in the penis stretches and expands in a nearly symmetrical manner. In cases of Peyronie’s Disease, however, scar tissue that is incapable of stretching impedes normal expansion causing the penis to bend in unnatural angles. When scar tissue extends around the shaft of the penis, it creates a bottleneck of sorts and makes the penis appear shorter.
Scar tissue develops in the penis after an injury or trauma to the erect penis, such as a sudden twist or bend that heals slowly or abnormally. In other cases, injections used to treat erectile dysfunction have caused scar tissue to build at the injection site. Certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, or diabetes may also contribute to the onset of Peyronie’s.
Best treatment : penis traction device vs surgery
Penile curvature treatment varies based on the underlying cause. Surgery may be required in some extreme cases, but only after other treatment methods have been attempted for a year or two. Indeed, many men view surgery as a last resort option, particularly after viewing graphic photos of penile curvature surgery.
During the one to two year waiting period before resorting to surgery, some men are lucky enough to have a spontaneous curvature correction that requires no penile curvature treatment at all. However, 40% of men will see no improvement in symptoms during that time while another 40% may experience worsening symptoms.
As a penile curvature treatment, surgery to correct curvature of the penis, such as the popular Nesbit procedure, can result in a shortening of the penis by up to 2 inches. As if that weren’t bad enough, other surgical options carry the risk of partial or complete impotence.

Attempting alternative penile curvature treatment methods before resigning yourself to surgery is certainly a worthwhile endeavor. The most understood and successful alternative treatment is the use of a penis traction device, often used in conjunction with vitamin E therapy.
These devices work by applying a gentle and consistent pressure to the penis to alleviate scar tissue while straightening any curvature. Results are best when the device is worn consistently over the course of several months; it can even be worn discreetly under clothing to minimize inconvenience. Penis traction devices have been accepted by clinics and hospitals across the United States and Europe to encourage post-op penis healing and as an alternative to risky surgery.
Penis traction devices carry no harmful side effects, cost much less than surgery, and can be used in the comfort of your home.
Many men combine penis traction device usage with vitamin E or potassium amonobenzoate supplements (Potaba) to enhance their results.
As with any medical condition, consult a physician before beginning a penile curvature treatment.
